Homeopathy and Addictions
by: Caroline Walrad Ph.D., CN
Homeopathic remedies will help the addictive personality by bringing him into a
state of balance on all three levels of physical health, emotional health and
mental health. This form of constitutional analysis results in the individual
seeing his limited range of thinking and bring him into alignment with his
higher purpose. The physical body balances and cravings are reduced. This
process is deep and transforming.
When does desiring an alcoholic drink become an addiction? When is the
cigarette, food, Internet, gambling, sexual stimulation, glass of wine or buying
one too many pieces of clothing become a problem? After all, society encourages
us to partake! Addictive personalities tend to use something else to make them
feel good, ok, important, painless, and cut off. The immediate gratification is
much better than experiencing feelings that have never found resolution.
Homeopaths use a book called a repertory to look up the correct remedy for the
patient’s symptoms. Wisdom is combined with experience and education to know
exactly what to look up in the repertory. When an addictive patient is speaking
with a homeopath, the patient is generally unaware of the real problem. It is
the homeopath that determines the underlying issue of the patient’s addiction(s)
and then selects the ‘rubrics’ from the repertory that describe the true
underlying motivation. Fears and Delusions must be acknowledged. When the rubric
is found in the repertory, remedy names are listed after the rubric. When the
correct remedy selection is made and the patient takes this remedy, the changes
in the patient are immediate.
The Homeopathic Repertory contains a tremendous amount of ‘symptoms’ listed as
the term, rubrics. Under the repertory section (Synthesis, Dr Frederik Schroyens),
MIND, we find our rubrics for the addictive personality. It is fascinating to
read the sub- rubrics:
Alcoholism:
- Drinking on the sly
- Excitement, from alcoholism
- Get up at night to drink: must
- Grief, after
- Hereditary
- Hypochondriasis, with
- Idleness, from
- Irritability, with
- Oblivion is like; drinking to see what
- Pregnancy, during or after
- Timidity, from
- Weakness of character, from
Gambling

TOXICITY chapter:

- Hypochondriasis from gastric or liver troubles

Tobacco
These are a just a sample of a repertory and the symptoms within one. There
are many remedies that are indicated behind eat of the above rubrics. One of
these remedies is NUX VOMICA. Because the provings of homeopathics include
symptoms of the mental and emotional spheres, the homeopath generally refers
to the remedies as ‘personalities’. Each remedy also exhibits physical and
mental symptoms in the provings and written into the material medica of
remedies and the repertories of symptoms.
The Nux Vomica Personality: This remedy is made from the marking nut that is encased in a very hard
shell. The Nux Vomica seed contains strychnine. From the proving of Nux
Vomica, it is curative for one who is overexcited, on edge after excesses of
any kind without an adequate expenditure of physical energy. Nux Vomica
personalities are irritable and impatient (hate waiting in lines and is
upset in slow traffic). They have much trouble with those who can’t do their
work quickly and correctly. It is easier for them to do everything
themselves. They are workaholics and expect others to follow well. They will
enter an office pushing ahead of others. The addictive states crave alcohol
and other sedatives to slow them down. They crave stimulants to keep them
working. They are generally worse from all the substances they crave. The
digestive area is weak and cannot eliminate toxins well. Constipation is
very common. What drives the Nux Vomica patient is a fear of want: fear of
poverty and fear of dying from hunger. (Didier Grandgeorge, M.D., The Spirit
of Homeopathic Medicines).
Nux Vomica rubrics:
- Abusive, drunkenness, after
- Ailments from business failure
- Ardent
- Businessman, worn out.
- Delusion, bed, evening, someone get into and not room in it
- Delusion, bed, someone has sold it
- Envy
- Insanity, drunkenness, in
- Jealousy
- Malicious, spiteful, vindictive
- Fear of poverty
- Quiet, desires repose and tranquility
- Short sleep ameliorates
- Wakes with sinus congestion
- Irritable when questioned
(Rajan Sankaran, The Soul of Remedies)
“The Nux Vomica personality has many positive as well as negative traits.
The most univsersal and fundamental aspect of Nux’ character is a love of
power, and an ability to acquire power and exercise it with confidence.”
Philip M. Bailey, M.D. in his book, Homeopathic Psychology, writes about Nux
Vomica archetypes. “The Warrior in the Nux personality is in their ‘blood’.
It is winning that gives meaning to his life. On the other hand, the Nux
warrior feels restless during peacetime. The Nux warrior (man or woman) is
in control of his own destiny and will not follow orders from any, except
another Nux warrior whose skill and experience exceed his own. He/She does
not fight out of bitterness, but out of enjoyment. They are so
self-confident and sure of his own powers, that he tends to ignore rules and
regulations.“
Baily continues: "The Knight archetype is not ruthless, but follows a code
of honour, and love to defend the weak. This Nux is a Knight to his/her
partner and children. The Emperor archetype was born for leadership. Just as
some Kings are noble, whilst others are tyrants, so it is with the Nux
leader. Both types have their hands very firmly on the controls, and know
exactly what they are doing….The Expert individual become experts, often in
more than one field. Nux has a natural love of excellence…The Playboy can
become a hedonistic playboy….Nux is self-indulgent sensualist. His appetite
for excitement, food, alcohol and sex are almost as insatiable as his lust
for power. ..many Nux people are addicted to stimulation. They live on the
‘buzz’ of victory, the buzz of danger, the buzz of rich food and
intoxicating liquor, and spend it on a luxurious and stimulating lifestyle.”
When these symptoms fit someone’s symptoms, then a low potency Nux Vomica
(6x, 6c, 12x, 12c or 30x potency) is available over the counter for him. Nux
Vomica is a wonderful liver detoxification stimulant and digestive balancer
as well. These low potencies should be taken daily until symptoms improve or
the above symptoms develop if they were not there before. It is always best
to consult a classically trained homeopath in order to achieve desired
results.
There are many homeopathic remedies for addiction. This is just one of them.
In the MIND section in the Murphy repertory and located under Addictive,
personality, 8 remedies are listed. In Murphy’s Clinical chapter, the
repertory has the rubric, ALCOHOLISM, general. Here 126 remedies are listed.
Each of these remedies contain their own individual set of symptoms. A
remedy match must take place with the addictive person’s symptoms for
healing to take place. More study and internet search can begin one on their
road to wellness.
